Stein Mugs
Stein Mug or so-called Beer Stein with pewter lid is a traditional German product, first appeared during the Black Death plague, mainly to prevent flies and bugs entering beverages as people believed they help spread a disease.
In the second half of the 19th Century, manufactures found advantages of using different types of materials. Stoneware would be used more for Stein Mugs that have to be carved, as mold was easy to shape. Glass would make production easier and quicker, while porcelain would be used for "character mugs", as they would be very easy to shape depending on characters they are representing.
Nowadays Stein Mug are very integrated in German culture, and are mainly used as decorative pieces, collectibles or souvenirs. Made in different shapes, decorated with many color layers and even with carved pewter lids, they represent different parts of Germany and its culture.
